The Wall Street Journal reports that “Business is bad on Wall Street, and business schools across the country are bracing for the impact: A surge in applications this year to their full-time M.B.A. programs… many people are deciding that now is a good time to head back to school. Some would-be students are the victims of layoffs roiling the financial industry. Others think their jobs could disappear soon.” I’m all for education. But if you are an entrepreneurial type, getting that MBA to advance your career may not be the ticket to success. Among the entreprenurs without advanced degrees are Virgin’s Richard Branson who dropped out of school at age 16, which, incidentally, is the same age as Walt Disney when he quit school. Michael Dell waited until age 19 to drop out of college and start a computer business. Bill Gates left Harvard in his junior year to start a small computer-related business. And that degree comes with a hefty price tag. According to MBAPrograms.org “The average cost is $40,000 for a year (or $80,000 for two years). Some MBAs are $60,000 a year…” And, of course, you will be in school for two years—or more if you attend part time. There may be a better investment for you career. No, it’s not an advanced degree such as an MBA or a PhD. The best investment you can make might be a PHB. What’s a PHB? That’s what we smilingly call a Professional Hardcover Book. Because when it comes to credentials, nothing distinguishes you from your colleagues and competitors like having authored your own book. Which is why many of the best-known entrepreneurs, including high-flying Richard Branson, Carly Fiorina, Jack Welch, Anita Roddick, and Sam Walton wrote books. Even more relevant to you are recent real-life PHB success stories. For example, Jack Hubbard and Robert St. Meyer are growing their sales training company in spite of the recession—in part by leveraging their book Converstations With Prospects . And there’s financial advisor Roland Manarin, who has parlayed his Manarin On Money into appearances on CNBC an Fox Business. Look at Walt Pavlo, who was on the Today show earlier in October, and has used his Stolen Without A Gun to create a flourisihing public speaking and consulting career. These individuals are inspirations to entrepreneurs everywhere. And they all discovered that a Professional Hardcover Book can be worth far more than an MBA when it comes to branding and growing their businesses.
